Some residents may need help with the use of a bathroom; others may need help with mobility or balance issues. Some residents are deaf or blind, have mental challenges or paralysis that limits their ability to walk or stand on their own. In these instances, there are the same kinds of activities like physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, band or computer training, cooking classes, and medical care available for all residents. Independent senior living communities have some of the most luxurious settings available for seniors. Some communities offer a twenty-four-hour room and board and the option of having a gardener for assistance in cooking. The best senior communities offer several amenities including onsite restaurants, fitness centers, shopping centers, beauty shops, health clubs, and community meeting places. Independent living communities for seniors also offer furnished apartments. Many independent living communities provide community activities such as dances, concerts, and lectures. Independent living accommodations come with or without staff. The independent senior living communities may not have housekeeping. Independent living accommodations may not have skilled nursing care. Some have all staff, while others have part-time housekeepers on call. The cost of independent living accommodations varies. The price ranges from one hundred to four hundred dollars per week or maybe as high as one thousand dollars a week. Independent living accommodations are not for everyone. Before signing any agreement with an independent living facility, a resident must meet several different requirements, including his or her ability to pay, ability to obtain transportation, level of physical ability, capability to pay for requisite maintenance, and ability to follow specific guidelines. Each independent living facility has its policies and procedures.
